Nowadays, low cost travel can easily encompass the best things about a touristic destination. This is valid for Turkey as well, one of the Briton's favourite sunny destination. This country is not all about wonderful beaches, nightlife and dining spots though - it is also a place of historical richness. Let's find out now some of the top attractions for the history, culture and ancient ruins.

Hagia Sophia
To be found in Istanbul, the once glorious Christian cathedral is now a museum-mosque of breathtaking grandeur. Built on higher ground, it overlooks the sea and the Bosphorus and that is one of the greatest views Turkey can offer.

Ephesus
Close to Izmir ad Kusadasi resort, Ephesus is one ancient Greek site, once a most vibrant centre of the classical world. There are well-preserved roman and Greek ruins alike, which make it one of the best sites of this kind in the Mediterranean region. Ephesus was also ruled by the Persians. Tourists may walk down its ancient streets, view its old houses, stadiums, temples and so on. The place tends to get crowded.

Cappadocia Underground Cities
An iconic place for the country, Cappadocia is near the Nevsehir resort and hosts about 40 underground cities. Some of these can be visited. They were created by the early Christians, who were so often prosecuted in the 4th century. The structure is astonishing through its complexity and has been a UNESCO site for decades. Not only this, but also the natural landscape is something to behold.

Aspendos Roman Theatre
Specific to ancient Rome, the construction looks almost intact today, although it was erected between 100AD and 199AD. A total of 15,000 people could be seated here. In present times, it serves as setting for a summer festival and is very accessible to Antalya-based visitors.

Assos
The city of Assos on the Turkish coast belong to the ancient Greeks and was home to Aristotle and his philosophy school. St. Paul is also said to had passed through. Situated near Behram, it is now a seaside resort called Behramkale. The Temple of Athena is the most prominent among the Assos monuments and stands on the crest of a volcanic mountain. Much of the ancient city has been preserved.

This only represents a tiny bit of the old wonders Turkey has to offer. The country not only hosts remarkable open-air sites, but also plenty of fascinating museums filled with artifacts and relics.
